Daikoji Café

大光寺カフェ

One of Aomori Prefecture’s most unique cafés in a renovated hot-spring facility

Aomori Prefecture’s Hirakawa City is home to a very unique café that integrates elements of traditional Japanese culture.

Daikoji Café is located in a renovated building that was once Daikoji Onsen, a local hot-spring facility. As soon as you step inside, you’ll notice traces of the time when it was a hot-spring facility. With features distinctive of Japanese public baths such as the high ceiling, tiled floors, stone bathtubs, and even the sets of mirrors and faucets in the washing areas preserved, you can feel immersed in Japan’s traditional hot-spring culture despite being in a café. The glassed-off inside of the café gets plenty of sunlight, and the interior design based on the original wood from the hot-spring facility gives the space a relaxing appearance as well.

It goes without saying that you can also enjoy delicious sweets and beverages.

Colorful fruit parfaits brimming with various kinds of fruit and lots of whipped cream are a popular menu item. You can adjust the flavor as you like with the separately served berry sauce. Local fruit may be used depending on the season. When it comes to beverages, the “Cassis Orange” is recommended. The refreshing combination of homemade blackcurrant sauce and orange juice will quench your thirst. It is non-alcoholic, making it a safe choice for non-drinkers as well. With various other menu items available depending on the season, you’ll definitely want to stop by.

Aomori Prefecture being well known as a region with a deeply rooted café culture, there are many cafés that may tempt you to visit on your trip, but Daikoji Café is one of the most unique.

The combination of experiencing Japan’s hot-spring culture within a café and the delicious sweets and beverages are sure to provide you with unforgettable and relaxing moments on your Aomori trip.
