Amazing AOMORI

Kabushima Island at the northern tip of the Tanesashi Coast has been designated as a natural monument by the Japanese government and is also famous as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls. Located a very short walk away is Kabu-nya, a local product retail facility popular among visitors to the island.
 
 

At Kabu-nya, you can enjoy light meals made with local ingredients.

One popular item is the tender-grilled Hachinohe squid tentacles. Grilled on a skewer with salt and pepper, they feature a savory aroma and the rich umami of squid. Also popular is the fish sandwich made with deep-fried Hachinohe cod fillet. The tender cod coated with crispy batter goes perfectly with the hot-dog-bun-style bread. (You can choose your preferred one from among two sauces.)

The gelato featuring local ingredients is also recommended. Exclusive flavors like Aomori strawberries, lees from Hachinohe’s famous sake brand Mutsu Hassen, and Hachinohe’s original cider Mishima Cider are popular. Adding Hachinohe’s traditional Nambu Sembei crackers or adorable black-tailed gull cookies as a topping will make your gelato even more photogenic for social media. Various other foods connected to Hachinohe are available on a seasonal basis.
 
 

The facility also offers a wide selection of Hachinohe souvenirs. From traditional crafts like Nambu Sakiori weaving and Hachinohe-yaki pottery bowls and cups to T-shirts with designs of Kabushima Shrine and black-tailed gulls as well as miscellaneous goods, a wide range of souvenirs are available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds from T-shirts are donated to activities to protect the gulls, so your memento of your trip will contribute to local conservation efforts for the natural environment.
 
 

The facility was renovated in May 2025 with a wood-toned interior that creates a sense of warmth, and counter seating with an oceanfront view was installed in the dining space to give visitors an even more pleasant experience.
