Aomori Prefecture is a famous sake-producing region that draws fans of delicious sake from all over Japan. Here is one spot that sake lovers definitely won’t want to miss.

The historic sake brewer Hachinohe Shurui Co., Ltd., founded in 1786 in Hachinohe City operates a brewery outlet store where you can not only purchase various brands of sake but also enjoy various experiences like tasting sake, purchasing traditional sake vessels, and even touring the brewery.

Visitors will be immediately charmed by the beauty of the brewery outlet store building. Influenced by Western architecture, this historic structure built in 1924 has been registered as a Tangible Cultural Property by the national government. At twilight, the dreamlike sight of light streaming out through the stained glass with distinctive Secession-style geometric ornamentation on the first floor creates a retro, nostalgic atmosphere.

The store has a woody interior with a relaxed ambience and sells various brands made by Hachinohe Shurui Co., Ltd., including its flagship brand Hachitsuru, as well as Joku, which won a show’s Gold award. In addition to purchasing, you can taste some of the brands for as little as 200 or 300 yen. Several different brands are available to taste, so you can compare them and find your personal favorite. The standing bar inside the store also offers sake sets including light snacks.

After enjoying some sake, be sure to stop by the souvenir corner. The outlet store sells traditional sake vessels such as ochoko (sake cups) at affordable prices. Drinking sake at home with your very own newly purchased ochoko cup is the perfect way to reminisce about your Aomori trip.

The outlet store also offers free brewery tours*. This experience is recommended to anyone who wants to learn more about sake.

*The brewery is open for free tours (unguided) on weekdays and Saturdays between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. You must receive a brewery entry pass issued at the outlet store beforehand. Please note that the brewery may not be open for tours even on weekdays for reasons such as maintenance.
