Zuguri Spinning Tops
Wooden tops spun on top of the snow, a unique pastime of snowy Aomori Prefecture
There are many different kinds of spinning tops all over the world, and the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture has its own traditional wooden tops known as Zuguri. These tops lack a stem on top, while the body is hollowed out like a bowl on the inside and beautifully decorated with colorful designs. A thick, rounded tip protrudes from the bottom of the body. Zuguri tops are characterized by their distinctive shape as well as their beautiful designs.
Although wooden Kokeshi dolls crafted by skilled artisans are among the most famous folk arts of Aomori Prefecture, Zuguri tops have also been designated a traditional craft of Aomori. Ones created by artisans who carry on this traditional vocation are considered valuable works of folk art.
Zuguri tops are popular toys enjoyed year-round but particularly in winter, when a special game unique to snowy Aomori Prefecture is played. Popular in the Tsugaru region of Aomori, the traditional game involves spinning Zuguri tops in a ring built from snow and seeing whose can spin for the longest.
In Aomori’s Kuroishi City, a Zuguri-spinning competition is held every February. Participants both young and old come from all over Japan to join the exciting competition. If you visit, the enthusiasm of the contestants is sure to make you forget all about the winter cold.
