Canola blossoms have a brilliant yellow color that lifts the spirits. Yokohama Town in Aomori Prefecture has among the largest planted areas of these beautiful flowers in all of Japan. With a planted area of 128 hectares, it has even set a Japanese record, making it a famous canola-blossom spot with the largest planted area in Japan.
The canola blossoms in Yokohama Town begin to bloom in early May and are best viewed from mid- to late May. During this time, beautiful scenery teeming with yellow canola blossoms can be seen along Hamanasu Highway (National Route 279).
On a Saturday and Sunday in mid-May, Yokohama Town’s big event, the Canola Blossom Festival, is held in the middle of the canola-blossom fields, and the vast fields bustle with tourists.
Surrounded by mountains and sea, Yokohama Town is also blessed with an abundant variety of food, making it a treasure trove of delicacies.
In addition to canola oil produced in the town, there is also canola honey, delicacies made from the shoots and stalks of the canola plant, and much more. Some of the most popular treats include canola cream puffs filled with custard containing canola honey; rich, milky canola soft-serve ice cream; and canola donuts! You can enjoy tasty sweets to your heart’s content.
