Nambu Sakiori Weaving
南部裂織
Born long ago from efforts to conserve precious fabric, Nambu Sakiori is woven from cotton threads as the warp (vertical) threads and old rags torn into fine strips as the woof (crosswise) threads. With its colorful designs, it is now used to create items such as handbags and pouches. A large Nambu Sakiori tapestry with a design of the Hakkoda Mountains greets visitors in the concourse of Shichinohe-Towada Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen.
