Nihon Canyon

日本キャニオン

Sheer cliffs of white rock, a rare sight in Japan

Juniko is the collective name for 33 lakes and ponds surrounded by beech forests in the western part of the Shirakami Sanchi region. This area is home to white rock cliffs known as the Nihon Canyon or “Japan Canyon.” The looming, rugged white tuff gives the place an unusual scenic beauty reminiscent of the Grand Canyon in the U.S., after which it is named.

The Nihon Canyon observation deck is reached by climbing for about 20 minutes up a mountain trail, the entrance to which is located at the parking lot near Juniko’s Hakkei Pond. Although the trail is well maintained, it is more challenging than you might expect, requiring strong hiking ability as well as precautions against the heat in summer. If you are less confident in your strength or legs, the canyon can also be viewed from National Route 101 at the base or the Juniko loop course.
