Tanesashi Campsite (Hachinohe City)

Enjoy the beautiful contrast between the blue sea and the green of a natural grass lawn along with the refreshing ocean breeze at this campsite, which is the only one to be found along the spectacularly scenic Tanesashi Coast. The campsite is close to the beach, and there is also an approximately 5.2-kilometer walkway extending to Ashigezaki Observation Deck that is lined with seasonal flowers. The campsite is open from April to around mid-November, and a prior reservation is required to use it. Note that you must bring your own tent (rentals are not available), and pets are not permitted.

Utarube Campsite (Towada City)

Managed by Towada City, this campsite is located amid a peaceful forest on the Ogura Peninsula along the shore of Lake Towada. Campers can enjoy stunning vistas of the crater lake, as well as the Hakkoda Mountains looming in the distance on a clear day. The location is also ideal for exploring the nearby Oirase Gorge with its majestic churning rapids and waterfalls. The campsite is open from late April to mid-November, and visitors can choose to pitch their own tents or book an all-inclusive plan in which everything from a tent, a folding table, chairs, and sleeping bags to cutlery, a grill, cookware, and a cooler is provided. Staff will set up and take down the equipment, too, which makes this plan a highly convenient option, especially for families or large groups. Cottage rentals are also available.

Aqua Green Village ANMON (Nishimeya Village)

This facility, which serves as a gateway to the UNESCO-designated natural World Heritage Site of Shirakami Sanchi, also has a campsite that is the perfect base for exploring the area. Campers can enjoy various outdoor activities such as hiking in the mystical old-growth beech forest and birdwatching, as well as bathing in a hot spring. There is also a shop selling souvenirs and camping equipment, a café serving local specialties such as handmade tofu, and an information center where visitors can book a professional guide to take them to the normally inaccessible uppermost tier of the spectacular Anmon Falls (as of the end of July 2024, the Anmon Falls trail is closed due to the impact of heavy rain). In addition to camping, there are also rustic wooden cottages with a barbecue space available for visitors to rent. The facility is open from around late April to the end of September.

Yagen Campground (Mutsu City)

This spacious and secluded campground managed by Mutsu City is located along the picturesque Yagen Stream section of the Ohata River, near the Yagen Onsen and Oku-Yagen Onsen hot-spring spas. The campsite is open from late April to early November, and no prior reservation is required. Amenities include a cooking area, toilets, coin-operated washing machines, and Wi-Fi. Camping with pets is also permitted, as long as they remain on a leash. Although there are no showers, campers can bathe at the nearby hot-spring facilities (note that in order to protect the natural environment, soap and shampoo cannot be used at Oku-Yagen Onsen).

Nagawa Cheririn Village (Nanbu Town)

In addition to a tent site and comfortable air-conditioned cabins, this facility at the foot of Mount Nakui-dake is also popular for its whimsical “treehouses” that look like a scene out of a fairy tale. The grounds are packed with various sports and recreation facilities and also offer easy access to the fruit picking for which Nanbu Town is famous, meaning there is plenty of fun for visitors of all ages. Both the tent site and the treehouses are fully equipped with a cooking area, showers, and toilets. The facility is open from mid-April to late October.

Maginotai Green Park (Shingo Village)

Offering both a campground and bungalow accommodations, this sprawling site is located on a highland plateau in Shingo Village, famous for its mysterious “Tomb of Christ.” There is an abundant selection of activities to keep the whole family busy, including barbecuing, catching fish, pony rides, and ice-cream making. The campground is fully equipped with showers, toilets, and a dining hall. Visitors can also purchase fresh local produce and dairy products at the farmer’s market inside the roadside station located in the park. The facility is closed from early November to late April.

Whether you’re an experienced camper with a full assortment of gear or a newbie who wants to stay more on the “glamping” side of things, there’s sure to be a campsite in Aomori Prefecture that suits your needs.
