Sakura Yabusame

桜流鏑馬

A grand ceremony featuring all-female riders

Komakaido (Kanchogai) Street is a scenic spot in Towada City that has been selected as one of the “100 best streets in Japan” and one of the “New 100 Views of Japan.” Around late April each year, the cherry trees that line this street reach full bloom, and the park alongside it bustles with cherry-blossom viewers who have come from near and far. Sakura Yabusame is held in this picturesque location. It is a valiant yet graceful display of the traditional Japanese martial art of Yabusame or horseback archery. All of the riders are women, and the horses are native Japanese breeds. They gallop through a course lined with cherry trees in full bloom. There’s nowhere else where you can watch Yabusame quite like this, so come and see it for yourself!
